Shlohmo - Bad Vibes
With an excess of ambient music floating about the indie side of the internet, it’s almost an arduous task pin-pointing certain artists or projects worth one’s time or those with a distinct talent that doesn’t need pretension to appreciate. While it doesn’t aim for the sky or desire anything more than its own capabilities, Shlohmo’s Bad Vibes is a low-fi ambient record intensely serious about being ‘chill’. It doesn’t demand your attention in any way whatsoever, but welcomes it if necessary with a slew of intricate and multi-layered sounds and ambiance. Bad Vibes is perhaps the only example of modesty in a genre filled with pretentious work. It’s the coolest paradox any producer has offered in recent memory. (7/10)

About 4 hours before Crizzly’s massive set at Trees Dallas, he spoke with Digital Wax about future projects, possible collabs and what it’s like to be one biggest names in Texas bass music. Flinch and AFK also tag along in the madness too.
Returning with his third mix-tape and the finale to his trilogy of previous releases House of Balloons and Thursday, R&B project The Weeknd is back with his most mature, well-produced and daring release: Echoes of Silence.
This, without question, could be The Weeknd’s most recommendable release yet by a long-shot. Where House of Balloons was an experimental R&B release, there was a slight requirement to keep an open mind and a bit of patience to appreciate the complexities of the album. On Echoes of Silence, we’re given a perfectly structured mix-tape where old and new fans can fall into The Weeknd’s immersion and intoxication almost immediately.
The mix-tape opens with “D.D.”, a phenomenal cover of Michael Jackson’s classic pop track “Dirty Diana”. Comparisons between The Weeknd and Jackson have always floated around, but this cover blows all possibilities way out of the water. The Weeknd gorgeously updates the 80’s hit, honoring it with a bold musical treatment by building bigger, darker and sadder beats along with a production style that’d give Nine Inch Nails a run for their money. It almost seems like The Weeknd even goes so much to improve on Jackson’s version by giving a focus on the storytelling where Jackson only used it as a vehicle for his abundant style. The Weeknd keeps both style and substance intact, and then some. It’s such an accurate cover, I could put money on the fact that if you played it for your parents, they’d think it was an unreleased Michael Jackson B-side or a remix of the original.
The rest of the album glides through with all of the elements The Weeknd is known for while also presenting a lot of new themes and ideas. The romance found in the lyrics is devastatingly sadder, mournful and gorgeously decaying. The drugs, the nightlife, the alcohol, are now a realized evil. There is an overshadowing darkness that gives everything the past two Weeknd releases were about a mirror to show how horrifying the party really was. By being the most mature mix-tape out of the three, Echoes of Silence makes sure not to make past releases seem inferior. Instead, it gives all of the Weeknd’s work a certain closure, making the themes come full circle and seem like it had been liked this all along; right from the release of House of Balloons. It was almost like reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the succession between the two series are similar.
This release alone not only works as the most successful Weeknd release that can be appreciated individually, but also credits the past two releases dramatically and places it in a more interesting context.
House of Balloons welcomes to the party of your life while warning you of the dangerous and intimidating high you’re about to encounter. Thursday explores the experience and provides the wishful thinking associated with that high. Echoes of Silence is what it feels like the morning after. The painstaking reality, the pain, the sadness, the sorrow, the regret of everything you just went through. You want to experience this. I don’t suggest you wait. It’s a critical musical experience for our generation for this year.
This album was my dad. (10/10)

Earl Sweatshirt has allegedly announced his return with a youtube video. He also recently dropped a song called “Home.” The song can be found here.
Should we start getting ready to welcome him home or is this another stunt from OF?
Digital Wax Recommends: Crizzly
Who ever thought Crunk music could get more rowdy? San Antonio native Chris Marshall, aka Crizzly, is the mastermind behind the bass-heavy music he calls “Crunkstep.” The image of a dirty southern rap club merged together with a massive, ecstasy-fueled rave comes to mind. Now picture Lil Jon’s hype-man energy screaming over robotic, abrasive, booming dubstep beats.
It’s an amalgamation of southern sound and noisy fury, it’s not hard to dance to either.
Follow/listen to Crizzly here:

Drake released his new Practice music video that went viral!. The video features a video vixen Kyra shaking her booty in her bedroom. Drake later in the video enters the room and the lights dim out. Check it out.

10. Sometimes EP by Dive

Maybe it’s my love of shoegaze, or perhaps it’s my rapidly fleeing time as a teenager, that makes me enjoy this EP just that much more. The combination of hazy guitar tones and echo-y, undecipherable vocals make this record more suitable for dreams and inebriated make-out sessions.
9. Funk Blaster EP by Koan Sound

Call it dubstep, halfstep, funkstep, what-have-you. There’s nothing wrong with adding a little groove to a genre known to pummel you with noise and bone-rattling bass. The combination of funk and bass-wobbles are reminiscent of a night of dancing with a pretty girl, who then turns into a carnivorous monster and swallows the entire club (funk band included) whole… in a good way.
8. One Hunned EP by Lunice
Lunice’s take on “Beat” music has both backpackers and bass music fanatics all bobbing along to his dizzying beats. Lunice seamlessly blends chopped vocals samples, swirls of synth-noise and boom-bap-y drums and bass. It’s quite a feat for someone who only has two EP’s, and a ton of remixes in his discography.
7. Idle Labor by Craft Spells

Our first love’s are unforgettable, there’s something remarkable about a fully functional partnership, between two human beings who absolutely adore each other. Bedroom-project-turned-full-band Craft Spells want you to remember the before, during and heart-breaking end of a relationship. Singer/songwriter Justin Vallesteros has, without a doubt, created well-written tunes that provoke a sense of warm nostalgia. It’s some of the best indie-pop that’s been released this year. That’s reason enough to sing along.
6. SBTRKT By SBTRKT

Leave it up to a bass music producer to craft one of the finest pop albums of the year. The features from Sampha (who sound eerily like James Blake), Little Dragon and others have beats that almost feel catered to their distinct style. SBTRKT’s lastest offering truly brings soul and lays it over drum loops, low key bass wobbles and excellent beats. Call it electro-soul, future pop, whatever, this is something you have to hear to believe.
5. Return Of 4eva by Big K.R.I.T

There’s something that feels unique about Big K.R.I.T. His outlook life, positive and humble mindset and sometimes even empowering rhymes truly feel genuine. From the beats to the rhymes, everything feels 100% soulful and cohesive. Just leave it up to KRIT to pave the way for southern rap in 2012.
4. Covert Coupe by Curren$y

The April 20th release date for Curren$y’s Covert Coup was no coincidence. It’s obvious Curren$y aka “Spitta” and producer The Alchemist wanted to create a soundtrack for bloodshot-eyed stoners to celebrate to. The foggy production from Alchemist truly compliments Curren$y’s smooth, weed-filled anecdotes. Creating one intoxicating listen from start to finish.
3. Villains Gone Bad III: Heroes for Villains by Hannibal King

Producer and comic book fanatic Hannibal King’s third installment to his “Heroes for Villains” series may be his best. His ear for flipping soulful tunes into full-on head-nodders ranks with some of the best producers in the underground.. This is a beat tape that never wears out it’s welcome.
2. Teams Vs Star Slinger by Teams & Star Slinger

Teams VS Star Slinger is a great collaboration between two crate-digging producers. Star Slinger, the soul-loving Manchester beatsmith collides with Teams, a more experimental-minded artist. The two together created one of the danciest, funkiest, warped and most of all, fun EP’s of 2011. It’s the equivalent of listening to one of your mom’s old soul records, remixed into a modern day dance party.
1. Bad Vibes by Shlohmo

Shlomo’s ear for ambiance is damn near immaculate. One listen to Bad Vibes will have your moods fluctuating with each track. “Just Us,” one of the highlights of the album teeters between haunting to just down right cute, all without making the listener question why. Not only is he the maestro in this DIY symphony, seamlessly composing breathtaking climaxes and subtle lows, but he’s also taking our heart and mind along for the ride.
We’ve been on a hiatus these past couple of weeks (nearly months), But we promise to get back on the grind in 2012, on behalf of the entire crew here at D.W., We’d like to wish yall a Merry Christmas, & A Happy New Year :)
The Weeknd’s final release of 2011, “Echoes of Silence,” has finally dropped.
